When Your Job Was Your Answer

The part of this nobody puts in career advice, and the reason the practical chapters are not enough on their own.

not enough on their own.

Everything in this collection has been practical. Audit the week, move toward accountability, build the record, take the difficult work. All of it holds. None of it addresses the actual weight of the thing, which is that for a lot of people the work is not only how they earn. It is how they answer the question of who they are, and it is where a large part of their sense of being competent in the world comes from. When that is threatened, the practical advice is necessary and it is not sufficient. It is worth saying so plainly at the end rather than pretending the whole problem is a strategy problem.

Why this hits harder than it should Ask someone what they do and they will tell you their job. The phrasing gives it away: not what they do for money, what they do. For many people, particularly those who trained for years to get there, the occupation is not a role they perform. It is a description of themselves. That is not a mistake to be corrected. Meaningful work is one of the better things available in a life and being deeply identified with it is often a sign that you took it seriously. But it makes disruption expensive in a way that a purely financial account misses. Someone whose function is being automated is not only worried about income. They are being told, by an impersonal process, that the thing they became is no longer needed. That is a different kind of injury and it does not respond to a repositioning plan.

The distinction worth holding onto There is one reframe that genuinely helps, and it is not a consolation.

The thing you built is not the job. The job was the container. What you actually built was a set of capabilities — the ability to see what is wrong in a situation of a particular kind, to make good calls under time pressure, to hold a standard, to be trusted with something difficult.

Those are yours. They were developed in a specific container and they are not identical to it, and they transfer further than they appear to from inside. This matters practically as well as emotionally. People who identify with the container tend to defend it past the point where defending it helps. People who identify with the capability move earlier, because they understand that they are carrying something rather than standing on something. The distinction is easy to state and takes a while to actually feel. It is worth the while.

The thing that does not have a technique Grief for a working life that is changing is a real thing and it does not have a productivity solution. If you have spent twenty years becoming excellent at something and the market for it is contracting, you have lost something, and there is no framing that makes that not a loss.

The mistake is treating it as a problem to be solved rather than something to be gone through. People who try to skip it often end up making a large, fast decision — a dramatic pivot, a resignation, a business started in a hurry — that is really an attempt to get away from the feeling rather than a strategy. Give it more time than seems necessary. Talk to people who have been through it, which is a larger group than it appears. And be careful of doing this entirely alone, because the private version tends to conclude that this is a personal failure rather than a structural change, which is both false and corrosive.

Where the collection actually stands The honest limits of everything here: these are ways of improving your odds, not guarantees. Some people will do all of it well and still lose a job they were good at, for reasons that have nothing to do with them. Structural change does not distribute itself fairly and nobody should imply otherwise.

What the practical chapters can do is make sure that when things move, you saw it coming, you have somewhere to move to, and you know what you carry with you. That is worth a great deal and it is not the same as safety.

The last thing The most useful sentence in this collection is probably the first one. Your job is not one thing. Neither, it turns out, are you. The version of you that got good at a particular kind of work is capable of getting good at an adjacent kind, and the evidence for that is that you already did it once, from a starting point where you knew nothing. That is the actual asset, and it is not on any list of tasks.

Go and do the audit. Then go and talk to someone about it.

make well, the situations you handle. That list is what you carry. It is longer than it feels.
